What Is the STV System?
STV stands for Single Transferable Vote.
Instead of voting for only one candidate, voters rank candidates by preference.
Your vote can move from one candidate to another based on election results.
How Your Vote Moves (Simple Explanation)
- First Preference (ONE)
Your vote is first counted for the candidate marked as ONE. - Surplus Transfer
If your first-choice candidate receives more votes than required, the extra (surplus) value of your vote is transferred to your SECOND preference (TWO). - Elimination Transfer
If your first-choice candidate is eliminated due to fewer votes, your entire vote is transferred to your next valid preference.
This process continues until 25 members are elected.
Why Minimum Five Preferences Matter
STV depends on continuous preferences.
- Less than 5 preferences → Vote invalid
- Correct chain of 5 or more → Vote stays active
- Broken chain → Vote stops at the break
The more valid preferences you give, the longer your vote remains effective.
